POKEMON CARDS

The current Pokemon card craze has been creating challenges at school and while we have tried a variety of strategies to manage arguments and conflict about them, as well as keeping them safe and not used during class time, we are now enforcing an outright ban.

Please remind your children that Pokemon cards are not to be brought to school.

KIDS AND SCREENS

Matt Davis had some great tips at our parent seminar last week and I would like to thank our School Council President Katie Wilson for organising the event and liaising with Matt.

As our reliance on devises in our daily lives has increased it’s impossible to ignore the impact of screens and technology use on our children. Among other things, Matt talked about how online games and app creators are using neuroscience and other techniques deliberately designed to get us hooked. Children and young people are particularly susceptible.

The impact of technology use is also becoming more evident in many conversations and interactions our students are having in the classroom and playground. As a school community we feel that it is important to be informed about the ways children are using and interacting with technology as well as current research.

As an aside, most Social Media (facebook, snapchat, twitter, Instagram) is only legally available to those over 13 but easily accessed by children nonetheless.

The following articles provide some useful information and recommendations

In the article “Fortnite, Boys and Self-Control”, the author outlines some (evidence based) recommendations which we encourage you to consider.

Both Common Sense Media and the eSafety Commissioner are great resources to help keep kids safe online.

It is also worth noting that the type of light produced by screens is detrimental to sleep and should be avoided for at least an hour before bedtime.

We encourage all parents and carers to consider what your family agreement is when it comes to technology use at home.

DEMOLITION WORKS NEXT WEEK

The old toilet block and library will be demolished over the April school holidays. Removal of asbestos will be part of that process, commencing next week. For everyone’s safety we recommend that at the times that the builders are on site during the day, families and children avoid the area.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday and a Happy Easter.

LUNCHES

We are having an increasing amount of students coming to the office asking for extra food at lunchtime. Students are eating their lunches at recess and then do not have anything left to eat for lunch. Can parents/carers please make sure that they have included enough food to last their children through the day. This would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hi everyone,

I love Autumn, with the leaves changing colour and time slowing down a little I think of pumpkin soup and colourful woollen socks and taking the time for long, slow conversations.

The state of the world has felt pretty precarious lately, and I think somehow it affects us all. That’s why I think it’s important to balance it up with big dollops of inspiration and hope. For me, the book Lykke has been that – shining a little light on ordinary people doing ordinary things that make the world a little bit of a better place. My favourite example was a family in Fremantle who created a community in their street.

Little_Book_Of_Lykke.jpg

May your school holidays be filled with lots of Lykke!

Prepare to love lykke, the Danish word for happiness and fortune, with The Little Book of Lykke by Meik Wiking, whose Little Book of Hygge sold half a million copies.

Wiking goes in search of the real meaning of happiness, and finds it has little to do with wealth.

Warm regards,
