Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden
At Winters Flat we have a keen concern for the environment, and for teaching the next generation about their relationship with the environment as an integral part of our holistic education process.
Our Garden has evolved as a place where children learn about the environment, science, technology, mathematics, nutrition and health. We have further developed a beautiful space where children will learn the connection between what they eat and their health, as well as an enjoyable place where they themselves grow, prepare and consume nutritious vegetables and fruits.
In 2011, we introduced our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program. We employed a specialist cook and gardener to implement this program.
We have also included a shade house/potting shed, storage shed, chook shed, rain water tanks, orchard, a grey water system and established a compost system, an element of the project the children are extremely excited about.
The garden also contains various exotic fruits, to expand the taste horizons of the children.
The school is very grateful to have received support from groups within the community such as Pioneer, which donated concrete for the project, and many parents and friends who have given up their time to assist.
