  SPACE is the acronym for social, physical, academic, creative and emotional well-being, a philosophy closely monitored at Winters Flat Primary School

Kevin Brown, principal at Winters Flat Primary School knows that the school community is committed to ensuring all children in its care have quality access to a comprehensive school curriculum.

"We believe that our school is a 'SPACE' school, in that we cater for each child's social, physical, academic, creative and emotional well-being . We believe all areas are equally important and we strive to put in place structures and programs that ensure, for instance, that the 'emotional intelligence' is addressed - as well as the academic," he says.

 

 

 

The school bases its understanding of 'emotional intelligence' from Griffith University's Dr Peter Jordan's research and findings.

According to the doctor, emotional intelligence, or EI, is as important an indicator of potential as IQ, if not more so.

"It seems the capacity to recognise and manage your own feelings and those of others is the way to happiness and success," Kevin adds.

Jordan's research found that emotional intelligence influences the performances of work groups, with high EI groups outperforming low EI groups.

Winters Flat curriculum initiatives, such as Program Achieve, are designed to skill the children in developing the foundations of confidence, persistence, organisation, and comradeship.

It is the teaching of these fundamental foundations that enable children to learn the necessary academic and social skills; to develop their EI as well as their IQ.
